9 Best Beaches in Rocky Point

by Joseph Toland

By Joseph Toland · Rocky Point Best

Rocky Point, also known as Puerto Peñasco, sits on the northern Sea of Cortez with a stretch of coastline that suits almost every kind of beach day. Some shores are lined with resorts and beach clubs. Others are quiet residential stretches where the tide pulls far out and the sunset does most of the talking.

This guide covers nine beaches locals and visitors ask about most. Drive times are rough estimates from the Old Port area and can change with traffic and season. Where a beach sits next to a neighborhood we cover on this site, you’ll find a link to current homes and condos.

1. Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is the social heart of Rocky Point. Golden sand, a long walkable shoreline, and a row of beach clubs, restaurants, and bars make it the place people picture when they say “Rocky Point beach.” Weekend evenings often mean live music and a busy boardwalk feel.

2. Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa (“Beautiful Beach”) sits near the main tourist corridor and is known for easy beach access. Soft sand and clear water make it a natural pick for swimming, volleyball, and water toys when conditions allow.

  • The drive: About 10 minutes from the Old Port.
  • The beach: Soft sand and approachable entry; popular for day use.
  • What’s there: Easy access points, nearby resorts, and plenty of weekend activity.
  • Parking: Street parking close to the sand; usually easier mid-week.
  • Neighborhood: Lively and family-friendly, with a mix of modern amenities and classic Rocky Point charm.

3. Playa Mirador

Playa Mirador, near downtown Rocky Point, is quieter and rockier than Sandy Beach. It is better for tide pooling and a low-key afternoon than for long swims.

  • The drive: Roughly 12 minutes from the Old Port.
  • The beach: Rocky shoreline; watch footing and tides.
  • What’s there: Local shops and restaurants a short walk or drive away.
  • Parking: Street parking is usually available outside peak weekends.
  • Neighborhood: Colorful homes and a more local, in-town feel.

4. Las Conchas Beach

Las Conchas is a residential beach community known for shells, wide sand, and some of the area’s best sunsets. It feels more private than Sandy Beach, with luxury homes along the shore rather than a wall of high-rises.
